About Dogecoin

Dogecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency named after the “Doge” internet meme, which features a Shiba Inu dog. Software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched it in December 2013 as a light-hearted take on the cryptocurrency craze of the time. There was no presale and no venture funding, yet it grew into one of the best-known digital currencies, used for small payments, online tipping and charity fundraising.

How Dogecoin works

Dogecoin's code descends from Litecoin through an earlier fork called Luckycoin, and the network is secured by proof-of-work mining with the Scrypt algorithm. A new block is found roughly once a minute. Since 2014 Dogecoin has supported merged mining, which lets miners secure it and Litecoin with the same computing work, and much of its hash power comes from this arrangement.

Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no maximum supply. Since 2015 every block has paid a fixed reward of 10,000 DOGE, so the number of coins rises by a roughly constant amount each year while the percentage rate of new issuance slowly falls. Development is carried out by volunteer contributors with support from the non-profit Dogecoin Foundation. On EX5, DOGE trades against Tether in the DOGE/USDT market.

What moves the Dogecoin price

Sentiment plays an unusually large role for Dogecoin. Its price has historically reacted strongly to social media trends, online communities and comments from high-profile public figures, which can lead to sharp moves in either direction over short periods.

Supply grows at a steady pace because of the fixed block reward, so demand has to absorb a constant flow of newly mined coins. Miners, who typically sell part of their rewards to cover operating costs, are therefore a regular source of supply on the market.

Adoption matters as well: acceptance of DOGE by merchants and online services, and its availability through brokerage apps and regulated investment products, affect how easily new buyers can reach it. Like other large cryptocurrencies, DOGE tends to move with the wider crypto market, the direction of Bitcoin and general appetite for risk, and it is sensitive to regulatory decisions about how digital assets are classified and traded.

How to store DOGE

DOGE can be kept in an exchange account such as EX5, where the exchange holds the private keys, or in a self-custody wallet. Self-custody options include the reference Dogecoin Core wallet, which downloads the full blockchain, lighter software wallets for everyday payments, and hardware wallets that keep the keys offline. With self-custody, the recovery phrase or wallet backup controls the coins, so it needs to be stored securely and never shared.

EX5 supports DOGE deposits and withdrawals on the native Dogecoin network, and credits a deposit once it has 2 confirmations. Send only native DOGE to your EX5 DOGE deposit address: tokens that represent DOGE on other blockchains are not the same asset and may be lost if sent there. Dogecoin transactions cannot be reversed, so check the address and network carefully before sending.
