About USDC

USDC is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of one US dollar per token. It is issued by Circle, a US financial technology company. USDC launched in 2018 through Centre, a consortium Circle formed with the exchange Coinbase, and since 2023 Circle has managed it on its own. Circle states that every USDC in circulation is backed by an equal amount of reserves held in cash and short-dated US government obligations.

Issuance, reserves and controls

Businesses with a Circle account can mint USDC by depositing dollars and redeem it for dollars, which takes the tokens out of circulation. This mint-and-redeem loop helps hold the market price near $1, because it gives large participants a reason to close any gap. Circle publishes regular reports on its reserves, examined by an independent accounting firm.

USDC is issued natively on several blockchains, including Ethereum, where it is an ERC-20 token. Its contracts allow Circle to freeze tokens at specific addresses, which it may do to comply with legal requirements. USDC is widely used for trading, payments and settlement in decentralised finance.

On EX5, USDC trades against USDT as USDC/USDT; EX5's own daily price history for the pair begins on 3 August 2026.

What moves the USDC price

USDC aims to stay at $1, so its price usually moves only by fractions of a cent. Larger deviations have come from doubts about the reserves or about access to them. In March 2023, after a US bank holding part of USDC's cash reserves failed, USDC traded well below $1 over a weekend and returned to its peg once US authorities said that bank's depositors would be protected.

Day to day, the peg rests on mint-and-redeem arbitrage: when USDC trades below $1, eligible firms can buy and redeem it, and when it trades above, they can mint more. Anything that slows that process, such as banks not settling transfers at weekends or payment-system delays, can let a gap persist. Over longer periods, stablecoin regulation, interest rates and competition from other stablecoins shape demand.

On EX5, USDC is quoted in USDT, so the USDC/USDT price compares two dollar stablecoins: a small move can come from either side of the pair rather than from USDC alone.

How to store USDC

USDC can be held in an exchange account, where the platform controls the keys, or in a self-custody wallet: software on a phone or computer, or a hardware wallet that keeps keys offline. Self-custody puts the recovery phrase in your hands, and no one can restore it if it is lost. Moving USDC on Ethereum costs a network fee paid in ETH, so a self-custody wallet also needs a small ETH balance.

EX5 supports USDC deposits and withdrawals on the Ethereum network (ERC-20) and credits deposits after 15 confirmations. USDC exists on many blockchains, several of which share Ethereum's address format, so always select the network shown on the EX5 deposit screen; tokens sent from another network may not arrive and can be lost. Bridged versions of USDC created by third parties are separate tokens, not native USDC.
