About Ethereum
Ethereum is a public blockchain that runs programs as well as payments. Developers publish smart contracts, pieces of code that execute exactly as written, and every node runs them in the same environment, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Ether (ETH) is the network's native currency and pays for the computation and storage that each transaction uses.
Programmer Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in a white paper in late 2013, and the network went live in July 2015, built with a group of co-founders. It originally relied on proof-of-work mining. The upgrade known as the Merge, completed in September 2022, moved it to proof of stake: validators lock up ETH as a security deposit, propose and attest to blocks, and can lose part of that deposit if they break the protocol's rules.
Supply and fees
ETH has no fixed maximum supply. New ETH is issued to validators as rewards, while a fee mechanism introduced in 2021 destroys the base portion of every transaction fee. Whether total supply grows or shrinks over a period therefore depends on how busy the network is.
Thousands of tokens are issued on Ethereum under the ERC-20 standard, including the versions of USDT and USDC that EX5 supports, and many layer-2 networks post their transaction data back to Ethereum for security. On EX5, ETH trades as ETH/USDT, with EX5's daily price history for the pair starting on 3 August 2026.
What moves the Ethereum price
Network use feeds directly into ETH's supply. Decentralised finance, stablecoin transfers, token trading and new applications all consume ETH as fees, and busier periods destroy more of it, which can outweigh new issuance; quieter periods let issuance dominate. Demand for block space therefore links activity on the network to the asset itself.
Staking matters too. ETH locked by validators or held through staking services is not immediately available to sell, and the queue for withdrawing stake limits how quickly it can return to the market. Protocol upgrades that change fees, scaling or staking can shift expectations, as can competition from other smart-contract blockchains and the growth of layer-2 networks, which move activity and some fee income away from the main chain.
Like other large crypto assets, ETH also reacts to interest-rate expectations, overall risk appetite, regulatory decisions in major economies, investment products that hold ETH where they are available, and leverage in derivatives markets. These are mechanisms, not signals about future direction.
How to store ETH
ETH can be kept in an exchange account, where the exchange holds the keys, or in a self-custody wallet: a browser or mobile app for convenience, or a hardware wallet that keeps keys offline. In self-custody, whoever holds the recovery phrase controls the funds, and no one can restore a lost phrase.
EX5 supports ETH deposits and withdrawals on the Ethereum network and credits a deposit after 15 confirmations. Many other networks, including layer-2s and other Ethereum-compatible chains, use addresses that look exactly like Ethereum addresses. ETH sent to your EX5 address from one of those networks instead of Ethereum itself may never arrive, so check the network as well as the address, and consider a small test transfer first.
