About Avalanche
Avalanche is a layer-1 blockchain platform for smart contracts and digital assets. Its consensus protocol was first described in 2018 by a pseudonymous group calling itself Team Rocket, and the network's main developer is Ava Labs, a company co-founded by computer scientist Emin Gün Sirer. Mainnet went live in September 2020. Rather than having every validator communicate with every other one, Avalanche consensus has each validator repeatedly poll small random samples of its peers until the network settles on a result, which lets transactions become final quickly. Validators on the main network must stake AVAX to take part.
How the network is organized
The primary network combines three built-in chains: the X-Chain for creating and transferring assets, the P-Chain for coordinating validators and new blockchains, and the C-Chain, which runs Ethereum-compatible smart contracts. Teams can also launch their own blockchains, originally called subnets and now known as Avalanche L1s, with custom rules and validator sets while remaining connected to the wider network.
AVAX pays transaction fees, secures the network through staking and serves as a common unit across the ecosystem. Its supply is capped at 720 million tokens. On EX5, AVAX trades in the AVAX/USDT pair, and the exchange's daily price record for that pair begins on August 16, 2026.
What moves the Avalanche price
AVAX responds to the same forces as other layer-1 tokens, plus a few features of its own design:
- Issuance and burning. New AVAX enters circulation through staking rewards and scheduled releases from the original allocation, but the total can never exceed the 720 million cap. Transaction fees on the network are burned, so busier periods remove more tokens from supply.
- Network demand. Activity on the C-Chain and on Avalanche L1s, the share of AVAX that is staked, and its use in lending, trading and payment applications all affect how many tokens are wanted and how many are locked up.
- Competition. Avalanche competes with Ethereum, its layer-2 networks and other fast chains for developers, users and liquidity, and shifts in that contest feed into sentiment.
- Upgrades and incidents. Network upgrades, changes to staking or fee rules, outages and security problems in major applications can all move the price.
- Macro and market mood. Interest rates, overall liquidity and the direction of Bitcoin influence most crypto assets, AVAX included.
How to store AVAX
AVAX can be held in an EX5 account, where the exchange looks after the keys, or in a self-custody wallet, where you alone control the private key or recovery phrase. Hot wallets such as browser extensions and mobile apps are convenient for everyday use, while hardware wallets keep keys offline and reduce exposure to online attacks.
EX5 supports AVAX deposits and withdrawals on the Avalanche network, and deposits are credited after 15 confirmations. Avalanche's built-in chains use different address formats: C-Chain addresses start with 0x, while X-Chain and P-Chain addresses begin with an X- or P- prefix. Before sending, confirm that the chain and address format in your wallet match the details shown on the EX5 deposit screen. A transfer made on the wrong chain or to an incompatible address may never arrive and can be difficult or impossible to recover.
