About XRP
XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a public blockchain designed for quick, low-cost payments. The ledger went live in 2012, created by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto. It is closely associated with Ripple, a US company co-founded that year by Chris Larsen and McCaleb, which builds payment products that use the ledger and holds a large amount of XRP.
How it works
The XRP Ledger uses neither mining nor staking. Independent validators run a consensus protocol in which each server follows a list of validators it trusts, and a new version of the ledger is confirmed once a large majority of them agree, typically within a few seconds. Validated transactions are final. The ledger also has a built-in exchange for tokens issued on it, along with features such as escrow and payment channels.
All 100 billion XRP were created at launch, and no more can be made. The small fee on each transaction is destroyed, so the total slowly shrinks, and every account must keep a minimum reserve of XRP that it cannot send. Ripple placed a large share of its holdings in escrow on the ledger, from which up to one billion XRP can be released each month.

What moves the XRP price
XRP's total supply is fixed, but how much reaches the market depends heavily on Ripple. Releases from its escrow, together with how much of that XRP the company sells, returns to escrow or uses in its business, shape the flow of new tradable supply.
Because XRP is so closely tied to one company, legal and regulatory decisions about Ripple, or about how XRP is classified in major jurisdictions, have repeatedly triggered sharp price moves. News of financial institutions adopting payment services that settle in XRP can shift sentiment, although some of Ripple's products work without XRP itself.
Beyond these specifics, XRP responds to the same forces as other large crypto assets: overall market sentiment, interest rates and risk appetite, investment products that hold it where available, and leverage in derivatives markets. None of these points to a particular future price.
How to store XRP
XRP can be held in an exchange account, where the platform holds the keys, or in a self-custody wallet: software on a phone or computer, or a hardware wallet that keeps keys offline. A new self-custody address becomes active only after it receives enough XRP to cover the ledger's account reserve, and that reserve cannot be spent while the account exists.
