About Chainlink
Chainlink is a decentralised oracle network: a system of independent node operators that supplies smart contracts with information they cannot obtain by themselves. A blockchain can only read data already recorded on it, so it has no built-in way to learn an exchange rate, a market price or the outcome of an event in the outside world. Closing that gap is known as the oracle problem, and Chainlink is one of the most widely used solutions to it.
How Chainlink works
When an application requests data, several independent nodes each fetch it from their own sources, their answers are combined into a single value, and that value is published on-chain, so no single provider can change the result on its own. Price data feeds used by lending and trading protocols are its best-known service. Chainlink also runs the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) for moving tokens and messages between blockchains, Automation, which executes contract functions when set conditions are met, and Proof of Reserve, which checks that tokenised assets are backed as claimed.
LINK is the network's token. It is used to pay node operators for their work and can be staked to support the reliability of Chainlink services. LINK was launched in 2017 as a token on Ethereum, with a total supply fixed at one billion. The project was co-founded by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, and Chainlink Labs is the main contributor to its development. On EX5, LINK trades against Tether in the LINK/USDT market.
What moves the Chainlink price
Demand for LINK is closely connected to adoption of Chainlink services. When decentralised finance protocols, new blockchains or traditional financial institutions start or stop relying on its data feeds, cross-chain messaging or reserve checks, expectations about the network's future use change, and LINK is the token that pays the node operators behind those services. Activity in the wider DeFi sector, where Chainlink price feeds help secure lending and derivatives markets, therefore feeds into sentiment.
On the supply side, the total is capped at one billion LINK, but not all of it circulates yet. Tokens held in reserves linked to the project are released over time, so transfers from those wallets are closely watched, and the amount of LINK locked in staking affects how much is readily available.
Other factors include competition from rival oracle providers, any incident that calls the accuracy of oracle data into question, conditions on Ethereum, where the token is issued, and the direction of the broader crypto market, Bitcoin and interest-rate expectations.
How to store LINK
LINK can be held in an exchange account such as EX5, where the exchange manages the private keys, or in a self-custody wallet that supports Ethereum tokens. Software wallets suit frequent use, while hardware wallets keep the keys offline for added protection. With self-custody, the recovery phrase controls the funds, and you need a small amount of ETH to pay network fees whenever you send LINK.
EX5 supports LINK deposits and withdrawals on the Ethereum network only, and credits a deposit once it has 15 confirmations. LINK also exists on other blockchains that use the same 0x address format, so a wallet may let you send it on the wrong network; LINK sent over any network other than Ethereum may not be credited and could be lost. Check the network before every transfer.
