About Bitcoin
Bitcoin is a digital currency that runs on an open network of computers rather than on the books of a bank or payment company. It was described in a 2008 white paper by an author using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, and the network began operating in January 2009. Anyone can send, receive or independently verify transactions, and no single party can change the rules on its own.
How the network works
Transactions are gathered into blocks, and a new block is appended to the shared ledger, the blockchain, about every ten minutes on average. Miners compete to produce each block using specialised SHA-256 hardware, a system called proof of work, and the winner collects newly issued bitcoin plus the fees attached to the block's transactions. Every 2,016 blocks the protocol retunes how hard this competition is, keeping the pace near its target as computing power joins or leaves.
Issuance follows a fixed schedule. The reward per block halves every 210,000 blocks, which works out to roughly every four years, and total supply can never exceed 21 million BTC; more than 20 million have already been issued. Each bitcoin divides into 100 million units called satoshis. The reference software, Bitcoin Core, is open source and developed by a broad community of contributors.

What moves the Bitcoin price
Bitcoin's supply side is unusually predictable. New coins enter circulation on a published schedule, and each halving cuts the flow of fresh coins that miners may sell to cover their costs. Because issuance does not respond to demand, shifts in demand show up mainly in the price rather than in the quantity available.
Demand comes from several sources: people and institutions holding it for the long term, traders reacting to short-term moves, and regulated investment products, such as exchange-traded funds, in jurisdictions where they exist. Bitcoin has also tended to react to broader financial conditions, including interest-rate expectations, the strength of the US dollar and the general appetite for risk.
Other influences include regulatory decisions in large economies, hacks or failures at major exchanges and custodians, changes in mining economics, and leverage in derivatives markets, where forced liquidations can amplify moves in either direction. These are general mechanisms; none of them indicates where the price goes next.
How to store BTC
There are three common ways to hold bitcoin:
- Exchange account — convenient for trading, but the exchange holds the private keys on your behalf.
- Software wallet — an app on a phone or computer where you control the keys; practical for everyday amounts, but exposed to malware and device loss.
- Hardware wallet — a dedicated device that keeps keys offline. With any self-custody wallet, losing the recovery phrase can mean losing the coins for good.
EX5 supports BTC deposits and withdrawals on the Bitcoin network and credits a deposit after 2 confirmations. Send only BTC over the Bitcoin network to your EX5 deposit address: coins from other blockchains, including Bitcoin forks and wrapped bitcoin tokens, are different assets and may be lost. Check the full address before sending, because on-chain transfers cannot be reversed.
