About Solana

Solana is a Layer 1 blockchain designed to run decentralised applications at high speed on a single chain. Rather than splitting activity across shards or moving it onto separate scaling layers, it keeps one shared global state, so programs, tokens and users interact directly with one another. SOL is the network's native token: it pays transaction fees, and it is staked with validators, who produce blocks and vote on the state of the ledger.

How Solana works

Solana combines proof of stake with Proof of History, a continuous chain of cryptographic hashes that acts as a verifiable clock. Because the order and timing of transactions are built into that record, validators need fewer rounds of messaging to agree on sequence. Block production rotates among validators on a schedule weighted by stake, and the Sealevel runtime executes transactions that touch different accounts in parallel, making full use of multi-core hardware.

The project was founded in 2017 by Anatoly Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm engineer, and its mainnet beta went live in 2020. The Solana Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Switzerland, supports the ecosystem, while independent validators around the world operate the network. On EX5, SOL trades against Tether in the SOL/USDT market.

What moves the Solana price

Demand for SOL is closely tied to activity on the network. Decentralised exchanges, token launches, payments and games all need SOL to pay fees, and SOL is one of the main assets traded and posted as collateral within Solana's ecosystem, so changes in on-chain activity and developer interest tend to feed into sentiment.

On the supply side, new SOL is created as staking rewards under an inflation schedule designed to decline over time toward a long-term rate. The share of SOL that is staked, and therefore not immediately available to sell, also matters, as do large transfers or sales by early investors and other big holders.

Reliability is another factor. Solana has experienced several outages in its history, so upgrades that improve performance, or any new disruption, can affect confidence. Competition with other smart-contract platforms for users and developers plays a role too. Finally, SOL tends to move with the wider crypto market, Bitcoin, interest-rate expectations and general appetite for risk, and it reacts to regulatory decisions about how tokens can be offered and held.

How to store SOL

You can keep SOL in an exchange account such as EX5, which is convenient for trading but means the exchange holds the private keys on your behalf. For self-custody, software wallets that support Solana offer quick access for everyday use, while hardware wallets keep the keys offline for extra protection against online threats. With either kind of wallet, the recovery phrase controls the funds, so it should be kept offline and never shared.

EX5 supports SOL deposits and withdrawals on the Solana network only, and credits a deposit once it has 64 network confirmations. Send only native SOL on Solana to your EX5 SOL deposit address. Other tokens issued on Solana, and versions of SOL bridged to other blockchains, are not credited as SOL and may be lost if sent there.
