Bagholder

In short: A bagholder is an investor holding onto losing tokens, usually after their price has fallen sharply.

A bagholder is an investor holding onto losing tokens, usually after their price has fallen sharply. The “bag” is the position, and the bagholder keeps it, often hoping to break even, long after the original reasons for buying have faded.

Why it matters

The term points to common behavioral traps: loss aversion makes selling at a loss feel painful, and anchoring on the purchase price makes that price seem like the “real” value. Bagholders often appear at the end of hype cycles, when early buyers sell into a rally and latecomers who arrived through FOMO are left with tokens worth far less. Pump-and-dump schemes and rug pulls are built to create bagholders, and in illiquid tokens it can be hard to exit without pushing the price down further.

Example

A trader buys a small token after it has tripled in a week on social media buzz. Early holders start selling, the price falls most of the way back, and trading volume dries up. The trader keeps the tokens, planning to sell only once the price returns to their entry level. Months later, they still hold them at a steep loss; in crypto slang, they are “holding the bag”.
