FOMO, short for fear of missing out, describes investor psychology based on the fear of missing opportunities: the urge to buy an asset quickly because everyone else seems to be profiting from it.

Why it matters

FOMO tends to appear after sharp price rises, when social media, group chats and headlines are full of success stories. Acting on it often means buying late, at prices already pushed up by others, without research or a plan for what to do if the price turns. Crypto markets trade around the clock and can swing sharply, which makes the effect especially strong. Recognizing the feeling is a first step, and many traders counter it by setting their entry and exit rules in advance.

Example

A little-known token doubles in price within a day, and screenshots of gains spread across social media. A user who had never heard of the project buys in near the top without checking what it does. When early buyers take profits and the price drops, the user is left holding a loss, a situation often described as being a bagholder.
