HODL describes a long-term holding strategy: buying a cryptocurrency and keeping it through price swings instead of trading in and out. The word began as a misspelling of hold in a well-known Bitcoin forum post and was later read as Hold On for Dear Life.

Why it matters

Crypto prices can move sharply in both directions, and trading on emotion often leads to buying high and selling low. HODLing sidesteps that by ignoring short-term moves and focusing on a long time horizon. It does not remove risk: a coin can lose most of its value and never recover, and holding for years also means keeping keys and backups safe for years. Many long-term holders spread their funds across several assets rather than relying on one.

Example

A user buys bitcoin and moves it to a wallet they control, planning to keep it for many years. During a bear market the price drops sharply and friends sell in a panic, but the user sticks to the plan and makes no trades. How that turns out depends on the asset: HODLing a coin whose project fails still ends in a loss.
