A rug pull is the fraudulent abandonment of a crypto project by its developers, who disappear after attracting buyers’ money and usually take the funds or the trading liquidity with them. The name comes from pulling the rug out from under someone’s feet.

Why it matters

Rug pulls are especially common in decentralized finance, where anyone can create a token and list it on a decentralized exchange without review. Typical forms include removing all liquidity from a trading pool, minting large amounts of new tokens and selling them, or hiding code that stops holders from selling. Warning signs include an anonymous team with no track record, liquidity that is not locked, an owner who can mint or freeze tokens at will, promises of unrealistic returns, and pressure to act quickly. Checking these points lowers the risk but never removes it.

Example

A new token launches on a DEX with a liquidity pool that pairs it with a stablecoin. Heavy promotion drives the price up as buyers swap their stablecoins for the token. Then the developers remove their liquidity, taking the stablecoins out of the pool. Holders still have the token in their wallets, but there is almost nothing left to sell it for, and the price collapses.
