FUD, short for fear, uncertainty and doubt, means spreading fear and misinformation about a coin, a project or the market as a whole, often to push prices down or to turn people away from a competitor.

Why it matters

The term is older than crypto: it was used in the technology and sales world for marketing that plays on customers' fears. In crypto communities it describes exaggerated rumors, misleading headlines and coordinated negative campaigns that can trigger panic selling. The label is also misused, since some holders call any criticism FUD even when it points to real problems. The useful skill is telling verifiable facts apart from emotional claims.

Example

A post claims, without evidence, that an exchange has stopped processing withdrawals, and it spreads quickly across social media. Some users rush to sell or withdraw. A careful reader checks the exchange's official channels, looks for independent confirmation and, where possible, verifies on a block explorer whether withdrawals are still going out before reacting.
