Tokenomics, a blend of “token” and “economics”, is the economic model of a token. It covers how many tokens exist, how they are created and distributed, what they are used for, and what can increase or reduce the supply over time.

Why it matters

Tokenomics shapes how a token’s supply and demand can behave, so it is one of the first things to study in any project. Useful questions include whether there is a maximum supply, how much is circulating versus reserved for later, and what share goes to the team, early investors, and the community, along with when those tokens unlock. It also matters whether the token has a real use, such as paying fees, voting, or staking, and whether any tokens are burned. Large scheduled unlocks or high inflation can add selling pressure, while genuine utility can support demand.

Example

A project creates a fixed supply of one billion tokens. One portion is sold to early backers and released gradually under a vesting schedule, another goes to the team with a longer lock, a share funds community rewards, and the rest sits in a treasury. Part of every fee paid in the token is burned. Reading these rules shows how the circulating supply is set to change over time.
