Gold-backed crypto refers to tokens backed by physical gold. Each token represents ownership of, or a claim on, a fixed amount of gold, such as one troy ounce or one gram, that the issuer keeps in a vault.

Why it matters

These tokens combine exposure to gold with the convenience of a blockchain: they can be transferred at any hour, split into small fractions, held in a self-custody wallet and sometimes used in DeFi. Their value, however, depends on the issuer actually holding the metal, keeping it insured and audited, and honoring redemptions. Important details include who legally owns the gold, whether independent attestations are published, and whether tokens can be redeemed for physical bars or only for cash. Some issuers can also freeze tokens, as with other issuer-controlled assets.

Example

A user buys half a token from an issuer whose tokens each represent one troy ounce of gold, which gives them a claim on half an ounce. The token sits in their wallet and can be sent to another person in minutes. If the issuer allows it, a holder with enough tokens can later redeem them for a physical bar, usually subject to minimum amounts, fees and identity checks.
