Anarcho-capitalism is a political philosophy embraced by parts of the crypto community. Closely associated with the economist Murray Rothbard, it argues for abolishing the state and letting private, competing organizations provide services such as law, security and money through voluntary exchange.

Why it matters

The philosophy explains some of the language heard around cryptocurrency, such as money outside central bank control, self-custody, censorship resistance and “code is law”. Its ideas influenced parts of the cypherpunk movement and some early Bitcoin supporters, who saw a fixed-supply digital currency as a way to separate money from the state. Many people in crypto do not share these views, and critics question whether private institutions could protect rights fairly without government. Knowing this background makes debates about regulation and decentralization easier to follow.

Example

A community builds an online marketplace where payments move in a cryptocurrency that no government issues, disputes go to arbitrators that both parties choose, and participation is entirely voluntary. An anarcho-capitalist would see it as a small model of the ideal society, with rules, money and enforcement all supplied by the market rather than the state. A critic might reply that people without money or influence could struggle to get fair treatment in such a system.
