A wallet is digital storage for cryptocurrencies: an app, browser extension, device or account that keeps the private keys controlling your coins and lets you send and receive them. The coins themselves stay recorded on the blockchain; the wallet holds the keys that prove you can move them.

Why it matters

Every crypto user needs some kind of wallet. With a self-custody wallet you control the keys yourself, but if you lose the recovery phrase, the funds are usually lost for good. With a custodial wallet, such as an exchange account, the provider manages the keys for you, which is simpler but means you rely on that provider. Hot wallets stay online for convenience, while cold wallets keep the keys offline for stronger protection against hackers.

Example

You install a mobile wallet app, and it shows a recovery phrase of 12 or 24 words, which you write down on paper and keep somewhere safe. The app then displays a receiving address. When you withdraw coins from an exchange to that address, the new balance appears in the app once the network confirms the transaction. If your phone is lost or broken, you can restore the same wallet on another device by entering the recovery phrase.
