Satoshi Nakamoto is the name used by the person or group that developed Bitcoin. It is a pseudonym, and the real identity behind it has never been publicly confirmed.
Why it matters
Nakamoto published the Bitcoin white paper, released the first version of the software and mined the network's first block, known as the genesis block. After some time they stepped back and handed the project to other developers. Bitcoin has continued without a known founder in charge, which many people see as part of its decentralized character. It also means that anyone claiming to be Nakamoto deserves caution: a credible claim would rest on cryptographic proof, such as a signature from a key linked to Nakamoto's early activity, not on words alone.
Example
The smallest unit of bitcoin, one hundred-millionth of a coin, is called a satoshi, or "sat", after Nakamoto. Wallets often show network fees in sats. For example, a fee of 2,000 sats equals 0.00002 BTC, and 100,000 sats equal 0.001 BTC.
