Mainnet is the primary blockchain network of a project: the live network where transactions are real, coins have real value, and confirmed records are final. Its counterpart is a testnet, where developers experiment with tokens that have no value.

Why it matters

When a project launches its mainnet, its blockchain moves from testing to real use, with real money at stake. For users, the difference is practical: tokens sent on a testnet are worthless, and assets on one network cannot simply be received on another. Some tokens first exist on another chain and later move to the project’s own mainnet, which may require a token swap or migration. When depositing to or withdrawing from an exchange, check that the address and the selected network are the mainnet version the platform supports.

Example

A team builds a new decentralized application. First, they deploy its smart contracts on a testnet and use free test tokens to hunt for bugs. After the code has been reviewed, they deploy the same contracts on mainnet. From then on, users interact with the application using real funds, and every transaction pays a real network fee.
