An authority masternode is the networked server running the VeChainThor full node program that is approved to produce and validate blocks on the VeChainThor blockchain. The network was built on a Proof of Authority (PoA) model, in which only these vetted nodes create blocks, rather than anyone with mining power or stake.
Why it matters
Because block production is limited to known, approved operators, a PoA network can confirm transactions quickly and with little energy, which suits the supply-chain and business uses VeChain focuses on. The trade-off is decentralization: users trust a smaller, identified group instead of an open set of miners or stakers. Knowing who runs the nodes and how they are chosen is therefore part of judging such a network. VeChain has revised its validator rules over time, so the current requirements are set out in the project's own documentation.
Example
Under the Proof of Authority model, an organization that wants to run an authority masternode first discloses its identity and passes the checks set by the VeChain Foundation. It then prepares a server that meets the hardware and uptime requirements and runs the VeChainThor node software. Once approved, the node is regularly selected, along with the other authority masternodes, to propose new blocks and to check blocks from its peers. In return, the operator receives rewards in VTHO, the token used to pay transaction fees on VeChainThor.
