Airnode is an oracle node that provides data flow in the API3 protocol. It is open-source software that lets the owner of a web API run its own oracle, so data travels from the original source to smart contracts without an extra middleman.

Why it matters

Blockchains cannot call web APIs by themselves, so smart contracts depend on oracles for prices, weather, sports results and other outside data. In many oracle networks, independent node operators sit between the data source and the chain, adding another party that must be trusted. API3 promotes “first-party” oracles instead: the organization that owns the data runs Airnode itself and signs what it delivers, which makes the source directly accountable. Airnode is designed to need little maintenance once deployed, lowering the barrier for data providers.

Example

A weather data company deploys Airnode alongside its existing API. A crop-insurance smart contract sends a request for the rainfall measured in a region during the insured period. Airnode notices the request, calls the company’s API and returns the signed answer on-chain. If rainfall is below the level written into the policy, the contract pays the insured farmer automatically, without a manual claims process.
